LDL and HDL - How do they differ and how are they significant?
LDLs are approximately twice the size of HDLs. LDLs contain higher amounts of fat in the core and their ratio of lipid to protein is higher. By monitoring LDL and HDL levels, doctors can see if a patient is at risk for heart disease. LDLs and HDLs need to be in balance so that cholesterol travels to the cells as needed and there is no surplus in the blood stream. A large quantity of cholesterol in the bloodstream can lead to blocked arteries and eventually heart disease.
